This site contains the latest genealogy information
relating to the COODY (and related) families and is provided for the purpose of allowing members
of the family and others that might be interested with the information collected
and contained herein.
The genealogy information presented is a collection of many family members over
a 30+year period, and represents a consolidation of many significant research
efforts and considerable work.
This data represents a collection of data provided from numerous individuals and it has not been checked in total detail for accuracy. Unfortunately, when entering data into the computer ones fingers miss-key and inaccuracies creep into the data. While some genealogy computer programs now do a ‘reasonableness check’ during data entry, this has not always been the case, and a lot of errors got entered. We ran a reasonableness check on the data before publishing, and it generated a 9 page report of over 400 items to check. We are addressing these as time permits. Please be patient and understanding. If you please, notify us of any errors that you find and know the correct information.
As with any genealogy work, this is not complete, and we would certainly
welcome to be advised of any errors or omissions, and changes to family units
(births, marriages, deaths, etc.).
The data will be updated on a regular basis. Plans are to re-publish the data at
least ever three months, if not more frequently.
This site is dedicated to those in the family that have passed. We endeavor to
preserve and provide their history to future generations so they may know and
learn to appreciate their heritage.
Following the latest update of the COODY database on 31 August 2008 there are 45,115 individuals and 15,942 families contained. This is an increase of 1, 249 individuals and 593 families. During this update we corrected a significant amount of mis-information, added many dates and places of birth, marriage, death, and burial. We edited almost 3,000 individuals.
The most exciting and important aspect of this update was the determination of the father of Arthur Archibald Coody and his ancestors and the inclusion of a number of previously unknown spouses and their families as well as children who were not documented. In some cases we added 'twigs' to the family tree, in others we added major 'limbs'.
Also included in this site is an extensive database of Cherokee families. This included some 45,803 individuals in 15,684 families before the last major update. This database now includes 77,616 individuals in 24,910 families as of April 13, 2008.
While most of the data in the Cherokee database is "historical" we are beginning to obtain more current information on many descendants of these families to current times. It is trickling in very slowly.
There is also a transcription of the translated Moravian Diaries from Spring Place (1800-1836) and Oothcaloga (1823-1831. This is further explained in the ABOUT section and on its specific page.

One may observe from the above list some similar surnames in both databases but a large disparity between the number of people contained. The Cherokee database is primarily those persons of Cherokee heritage, and many persons within a family group i.e. (Coody) were not, thus not included within the Cherokee data. Also, the Coody database attempts to include ancestors of families as far back as possible, while the Cherokee data does not. It may only include parents of spouses who married into the Cherokee. Another reason for the differences lies in the fact that the Coody data includes many more later generations and includes many more of these people than the Cherokee data. We are attempting to remedy this and collect much more data on later generations, but we need your assistance in this regard. Please submit your family information.
